Energy Resources and Infrastructure
Print this pageRenewable energy targets for each sub-region are based on the Planning for Renewable Energy Targets in Yorkshire and Humber report (2004).
This draws on an earlier Renewable Energy Assessment of the region (2002), which mapped:
- Average wind speeds
- Availability of a range of biomass sources
- Potential micro-hydro sites (see figure)
It also looked at the potential for energy from waste, photovoltaics (PV), solar thermal, geothermal, tidal and wave sources.
The 2002 study identified significant opportunities for wind and biomass, a role for micro-hydro and greater deployment of PV and wave power in future.
Both reports can be accessed here: http://www.gos.gov.uk/goyh/menvrur/enrgy/247547
The above regional resource assessments could be a useful contributor to the evidence base required for policy making. The evidence base for local policy and targets may need to be supplemented with more detailed local analysis. Resource assessments need regular review so that they remain useful for informing policy and targets.

Regional Energy Infrastructure Strategy
Short term strategy and action plan, developed by the Regional Energy Forum, includes:
- Promotion of renewable electricity and heat generation, implemented within communities, including systems integrated with new and existing buildings
- Widespread use of combined heat and power and community energy schemes in urban and rural renewal programmes
- Establishment of regional bioenergy infrastructure, including widespread production and use of biomass and biofuels
- Energy recovery from residual waste
- Clean coal power stations
The Regional Energy Forum has also identified opportunities to establish district heating networks to make use of heat from existing coal and gas fired power stations.
Local authorities have a role to play in implementing community energy infrastructure to enable greater renewable and low carbon energy.
