Monitoring and review

Print this page

Monitoring progress with implementing policies and targets is important at all levels, to understand how they are being applied, how successful they have been in achieving their objectives, and to inform a decision on how they can be improved. Monitoring can also identify any other unintended consequences and ensure that the data and assumptions which the policies and targets were based on are remain relevant and up to date.

At the national level, the Government collates the National Indicators, using data reported by local authorities and other national statistics. NI186 Per Capita CO2 Emissions Per Local Authority Area is calculated on a national basis, using data from the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory.

The Data Interchange Hub has been developed by the Government to facilitate ease of data collection and reporting. It is used to collate and monitor data for the National Indicators (www.hub.info4local.gov.uk/DIHWEB/About.aspx). The indicators that the Government’ uses to monitor progress against its Sustainable Development Strategy, including figures on energy and emissions, are published annually in the Sustainable Development Indicators in Your Pocket report.

Data on national energy use and supply, including renewable and low carbon energy, is published in the Digest of UK Energy Statistics.
