The Draft Heat and Energy Saving Strategy
Print this pageThe Draft Heat and Energy Saving Strategy (consulted on in 2009) aims to ensure that emissions from all existing buildings are approaching zero by 2050. The proposals include:
- A new way of coordinating improvements to homes and communities, house-by-house and street-by-street
- A new focus on district heating in suitable communities, and removing barriers to their development
- Encouragement of combined heat and power and better use of surplus heat through carbon pricing mechanisms
- Widening requirements under Building Regulations to carry out energy saving measures alongside certain types of building work
- A new voluntary code of practice with the building trade on energy efficiency and low carbon energy
- A ‘whole house’ package for all existing homes by 2030, providing energy saving measures such as insulation, and renewable heat and electricity as appropriate
- Information and advice to help people make changes to save energy and save money
- New means of financial support for people to invest in energy savings and renewable energy for their homes, which allow costs to be offset by future energy bill savings
