Building Regulations Part L (2006): This part of the regulations came into force in April 2006 and provides guidance on Conservation of Fuel and Power for the following categories of buildings:

  • New Dwellings (L1A)
  • Existing Dwellings (L1B)
  • New Non-Domestic Buildings (L2A)
  • Existing Non-Domestic Buildings (L2B)

It introduced new energy performance requirements and amendments to the Buildings Regulations (2000) including:

  • National Calculation Methodologies (SAP and SBEM)
  • Accredited Construction Details (ACD)
  • Monitoring requirements

Future updates of the regulations are expected to require greater CO2 savings, approaching a zero carbon requirement for new homes by 2016 and potentially for non-domestic buildings by 2019. The updates to the regulations anticipated in 2010, 2013 and then 2016 are expected to reflect the increasingly stringent energy requirements of Code for Sustainable Homes Levels 4, 5 and 6.
